Eli's Mile High Club
World renowned Eli's has long been an Oakland institution. From the 1960s through the 1980s it was the home of the East Bay Blues scene. Many legends performed there throughout it's long running heyday. In the early 1990s, due to the musicians retiring (or dying) and the younger generation losing interest, Eli's owners were forced to sell the club. Since the early 1990s it's had many-many different owners. It's current owners cater to Oakland's Crusty Punk/Grind-Core/Underground-Metal crowd. Basically it's the crowd that frequented Biggum's Silver Lion and the Golden Bull, before those bars shut their doors for good. Nowadays you can find cheap booze, punk & metal DJs, and occasional live performances by local and touring metal and hardcore bands. Despite the fact it's right around the corner from Macarthur BART train station, I advise paying $5 for the 2 minute cab ride, especially if you're not familliar with the ghetto neighborhood West of the 24 freeway. If you do decide to make the 10 minute walk, just be careful walking around this area at night. No website currently available, so give them a call to see what's going on.
